Of all the animals I paint none is more special to me than the Dall Sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) of Alaska. These great creatures live in the most rugged and remote mountains of North America. Near my former home in Palmer, Alaska is the Knik Glacier. Deep in the Chugach Mountains this glacier provides safety from predators. Dall sheep thrive in the area surrounding the glacier. Many times my wife and I would fly our small plane around the glacier in search of Dall sheep. One would think a snow white animal would stick out among blue ice and black shale, but they would apear and disapear like ghosts, adding to their mystery and veneration.
